Design Philosophy Statement

Interior Design is present in everything, from residential to office designs. I first started getting interested in design in high school, and my curiosity has been growing ever since. My interest in design is focused on residential living areas, and how they can be transformed into new spaces simply by adding a splash of color or getting a new piece of furniture. I am constantly being inspired by things around me, such as buildings I see or even things in magazines. For my future in interior design, I want to design eco-friendly spaces that use natural materials and let in lots of light.

Palouse Sketch

Reflection: In this project, we were able to experiment using the Wacom drawing tablet. Using the tablet and illustrator, I took a picture of the palouse and then copied it using the paintbrush tool. This excersise was extremely fun as we were able to draw on the tablet and then watch it come up on the screen. I liked trying this new drawing technique, and I will certainly be able to use this skill in the future if I need to draw renderings but want them on the computer.

Resume

Reflection: The task of this project was to create a personal resume that used editing components from InDesign as well as taught students how to write a professional resume. This project helped me in learning how to write a resume, and what type of information should be on it. I also learned how to better use InDesign, as I had to place multiple documents into it and then edit them. This project also taught me that if one fails the first time to try again until you get it right. I had to completely start over from scratch after my background wouldn't work, but because of it I was able to learn more about the program and end up with a better product. Overall designing my resume was a fun process and I was able to learn valuable skills that will benefit me in the future.

Preliminary Sketches

Logo Design

The task for this assignment was to create a unique logo that represented our different design philosophies. I started out by using my initials to sketch different ideas, then added my full name and started experimenting with font. Once I found a design I liked, I decided to place a picture at the top to connect my name together and add a sense of unity to the overall design. The image started out as being two "J" letters that I flipped on their sides, but it eventually morphed into what looks like a bird in flight. This represents my design philosophy as I believe in creativity and free expression, and I feel that a bird also symbolizes this. Color was later added to add emphasis on the name, and the initials "KJ" along with the bird are all in blue to connect all the separate pieces in the logo. My knowledge grew in this assignment as I learned how to create a logo that was both professional and meaningful. I was also able to experiment using a drawing tablet, and I learned how to better use the InDesign program.

Romanesque Textile Pattern

Concept Statement: This design was based on the Romanesque style, and is comprised of images of Ancient Roman coins, tapestries, stained glass, and arches. The color harmony used was bright colors reminiscent of the era, such as reds, golds, blues, and greens.  These assist in keeping the pattern seem as if it is from the Roman era, and the colors all work together and blend well.  The contrast is also evident in the way that there are reds, greens, and blues on the textile, which are opposite one another on the color wheel.  The borders are horizontal and vertical, and the difference in opacity with the middle element also helps with contrast.  The textile seeks to incorporate unity and balance, with the outer borders connecting the print to the middle picture. The small pictures in the corners also offset the large image in the center.  Overall, the colors and placement of the images seek to encompass the overall style from the Romanesque period.

Reflection: This image is composed of pictures reminiscent to the Romanesque time period. The border is comprised of typical Roman patterns, along with Roman coins and an archway. The middle image is of a stained glass window combined with an image of a Roman painting. I liked this design because of the way that the patten turned out when it was put together. I also liked the colors used, and how they work well together. My skills in being able to manipulate Photoshop images have grown, along with how to manipulate images using InDesign. Overall, making this design was a fun process and I was able to expand my knowledge to create a unique design.
